How To Pack Dishes For Moving

When you are moving, it's important to take care of your items. One big area that you can make mistakes in and ruin your belongings is your dishes. It is essential to wrap each dish individually using plenty of paper and to never leave an empty spot in the box that could cause the items to move around while they are in storage. Here are some tips on how to pack your glassware for your moving adventure.

Pack the Plates

For added protection for your valuable china plates, you can purchase a special double-layered dish box. Dish boxes are a bit pricey, but you don't want to break your heirloom china pieces either. Consider this a must-have investment to protect your plates.

Begin packing the box with crumpled paper in the bottom of the box for added protection. This is a case of more is better. End the box with another layer of crumpled paper on the top as well as along the edges/sides of the box. The paper will help protect the dishes from vibrations that can cause chips and breaks.

Each plate should be wrapped with a sheet of paper, tucking each end to the middle as you go. Place the plates on their sides because if they are flat, too much pressure is in the center and will cause them to break.

Be sure to place the heaviest items on the bottom. You can use newsprint, but it will require washing the plates when you unpack the dishes. You can also purchase special plain packing paper for the job.

Pack the Cups and Glasses

Cups and glasses should be loaded sitting upright so they do not break. You can get special boxes for these as well to keep the glasses upright and separate, but packing them well will do the trick.

Close the Box

Label each box with top and bottom clearly marked. Don't use masking tape because it could come loose. Use a wide, strong packing tape. You can also purchase a tape gun to make the process faster. You should go use enough tape to go up the side of the box and across the entire bottom. Secure each end of the box with more tape to keep the container squared while you are packing it.

Each of these steps is important to ensure your dishes make a safe move. You will be glad you took the extra time to pack them the right way when you open the box and discover your fine dishware is still safe and secure.
